Tom Smith, owner of OC Home Furnishings Outlet, Inc, began as a Power Marketing Direct licensee in January 2008 and recently became a PMD Furniture Direct franchisee in December 2009.  Tom was drawn to PMD because of his previous experience in the home furnishings industry and for the opportunity to operate his own store.   He wants to expand upon his many years of face-to-face personal experience and build a successful business built on a commitment to customer service.  “I have proven to myself that if you take care of people through customer service, hospitality, and integrity, they, as a result, will take care of you,” Tom said.

Tom attended Northern Arizona University and attained a bachelor’s degree in police administration.  Although he wanted to make a positive impact in the lives of others through criminal justice, he took a job in a waterbed store where he became very successful.  It turns out selling mattresses satisfied Tom’s desire to help others and he stayed in the industry for more than 30 years working at the Sun Valley Waterbeds and Select Comfort.  During this time, Tom worked as a store manager and was later promoted to regional Vice President.  He earned multiple “Salesman of the Year” awards, company sales and record honors, but he enjoyed his employee’s success the most.  “I am most proud of my leadership contributions toward furthering the success of many of my employee’s and co-workers’ careers.

Tom’s wife is Karen and they have been happily married for 12 years.  Karen is a registered nurse who also strives to make a positive impact on the lives of others.  She was a source of inspiration for Tom when she walked 60 miles in three days for the Susan Komen breast cancer fundraiser, despite fighting chronic pain as a result of her fibromyalgia.  Together, Tom and Karen have two children – Julie and Sabrina – and five grandchildren.

One of Tom’s important goals is to maintain a promise he made to Karen, that if she wanted, she could stop working and retire.  Therefore, a key business goal of Tom’s is to build a business in a manner that will give him an opportunity to fulfill his promise.  So far after two years, Tom is well on his way to fulfilling his promise.
